Plastic bags are used for an average of 12 minutes.

Plastic bags tend to disrupt the environment in a serious way. They get into soil and slowly release toxic chemicals. It takes 500 (or more) years for a plastic bag to degrade in a landfill. When they eventually break down into the soil, they photo-degrade, becoming microplastics that absorb toxins and continue to pollute the environment.

Up to 80 percent of ocean plastic pollution enters the ocean from land and 8 million tons of plastic enter our oceans every year. By the year 2025, there will be 1 tonne (a metric ton) of plastic for every 3 tonnes of fish in the ocean. At least 267 different species have been affected by plastic pollution in the ocean. 100,000 marine animals are killed by plastic bags annually.
